  • Brush at least twice a day. Switch to a softer toothbrush. Use toothpaste that contains fluoride to help strengthen your teeth against decay.
  • Carefully floss at least once a day.
  • Rinse with mouthwash or warm salt water, but be careful not to swallow it. The warm saltwater can help soothe the inflamed tissues.
  • Some women develop a “pregnancy tumour” (Epulis) on their gums. This is a painless bump on your gums that can be pink, red or purple. It does not normally cause any problems, but care should be taken to keep the area around the tumour clean. Consult a dentist if you have this problem.
  • If you need to have emergency dental care during your pregnancy, you may need to have some X-rays taken of your teeth. Always be sure to remind your dental care professional about your pregnancy.
