- Equipment using solar energy, such as solar water heaters and solar cookers will reduce the consumption of electricity drastically.
- A 100-watt incandescent bulb, which typically lasts about 1,000 hours, can now be replaced by a 25-watt Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL) and last up to 10 times longer. CFL use 75 per cent less electricity than incandescent styles. Such bulbs are easily available.
- Wrapping the electric water heater with a tank insulating blanket will reduce the energy use by eight to ten per cent. These blankets are easily available at hardware stores.
- Plug your computer into a power bar. This will reduce the wastage of electricity when not in use. Plug each computer component into a power bar. Try installing a power bar with a ‘standby’ power feature.
- Since washing machines use electricity to heat the water, look for front-loading models while buying a new clothes washer. This will use only half of the water that a conventional machine uses.
- Use indoor/outdoor electrical timers in the equipment used. They can be programmed to turn lights on and off to suit your schedule. These are ideal for energy conservation and home protection.
- Use fans as they improve the air cir- culation in your home. Ceiling fans use one-tenth the electricity of a typical home air-conditioner. If you opt for an air-conditioner, select one with a high Energy Efficiency Rating (EER). This will cut down your cooling costs significantly.
- Go for Therma shield window curtains. These curtains keep out heat in the summer and prevent heat from escaping through the glass in the winter.
- To shade your windows install white window shades, drapes or blinds to reflect heat away from the house. Close curtains on south- and west- facing windows during the day make your air-conditioner work two to three times harder.
